Is your faith your own? Is what you believe something that you heard somewhere and thought it was a good idea. It seems to me that anyone can take a scripture and use it to back up what they are saying. Lets think about that for a moment. We can go back to the white people who owned slaves, or even further back about slavery and how they justified what they did with scripture. I was once approached by a friend trying to convert me to his "religion." His wife truely loved me and wanted me to know the "right" way. He also "used" scripture to back him up. Though he did not know where he was getting what he said the Bible said.
Um, not so long ago I was at Bethel University, they had invited the Equality Ride to visit the campus. This is a group of people who claim that Homosexuality is not a sin and they too have scriptures to back them up. So are we using the scriptures to back up things we think are a good idea, things we think sound like what God had in his plan. I have to think more about this.

Hey Joy. Sorry I didn't see your plea earlier or I would have written sooner. Funny thing is, I have been on your blog plenty of times, but I just never scrolled down to see your message. So, I heard about this equality ride thing. I would very much like to see the scriptures they used to justify homosexuality. The thing is, Fran is right. You have to look at scripture in the right context. So, here is my proposal. In the Old Testament, God commands his people not to engage in homosexuality. It seems like this became bound up in what the Jews would have called "sexual immorality". Christ warns against adultery in the heart and body. Then, after Christ's death, the Christians held a counsel in Jerusalem. They were deciding what to tell the new gentile believers who didn't practice any of the Jewish laws. The two things they came up with were, don't eat food sacrificed to idols and don't engage in sexual immorality. Based on the story of the Bible, what do you think God thinks of homosexuality? There is one more thing. Christians far too often think believing homosexuality is wrong means you should speak out against it on political matters like the definition of marriage. However, if anything, the overriding principle in the New Testament is not to judge others outside of the faith. So, if you believe it is wrong, which I think you should, that doesn't mean you should ever come down on someone from outside or be harsh with someone from inside the faith. A Christian should be corrected gently and a nonChristian should be left alone.
